Game of Thrones Season 8: Episode 4, “The Last of the Starks” mentioned a coffee cup that was muddled in shadow but fans speculated that the iconic coffee was coffee maker Starbucks. The director of GOT has portrayed some magnificent dragons, evil armies, the frozen lake, the ships, and not what. But the mistake of showing up Starbucks coffee in the episode received many backlashes from the audience.
The Starbucks coffee near Daenerys Targaryen during the celebration was just a mistake as said by Hauke Richter, Air director(GOT 2019). But a small mistake got the Starbucks, free advertising of $2.5 Billion, the value is estimated by a marketing CEO. The shot from the episode went viral on social media and was flooded with trolls. “Things can get forgotten on set. [The coffee cup gaffe] so blown out of proportion, it has not happened with ‘Thrones’ so far,” the art director said in a statement.
Starbucks finally responds to the mysterious coffee cup in the episode. The American coffee company tweeted, “TBH we’re surprised she didn’t order a Dragon Drink.” One of the users asks Starbucks about the ingredients of the drink. Starbucks tweets back with, “It’s the Mango Dragonfruit Refreshers beverage with Coconutmilk!”
Game of Thrones Twitter account finally tweets about the mistake done. “News from Winterfell. The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. #Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea,” HBO’s TV series tweets.
“It’s impossible to put a real figure on how much free advertising Starbucks gets out of the situation, but it’s in a totally different category than product placement because it was accidental, which makes it more valuable,” said Dan Hill CEO of Hill Impact.
The Games of Thrones episode drew 11.8 Million viewers for its first airing which saw a drop of 2% from the prior week. I hope that Daenerys Targaryen legacy was written on the Starbucks coffee instead of “Daena”
